"AR!" - It's Not Just for Pirates!!!

You'll be hearing the letters "A.R." a lot in the coming months. AR stands for Accelerated Reader. AR is a program that Santa Rita uses to measure reading and comprehension. AR utilizes a way of leveling books to maximize student success. Each book has a level which indicates the grade level of the vocabulary in the book. After a student chooses a book in his/her targeted reading range and reads it, they will take an AR test, which measures their comprehension of what they read. Each book is assigned a number of points and points are accumulated over the grading period. Each student will have a target point value to reach. At the end of each grading period in which the student is successful in achieving their goals, they will earn the right to attend a celebration party. Additionally, book levels will include one of three interest/subject matter level indicators: UG (Upper Grades), MG (Middle Grades), and LG (Lower Grades). LG books are appropriate for kindergarten through 3rd graders, MG books are appropriate for 4th - 8th graders, and UG books are appropriate for 9th graders and up. Parents and teachers should be very aware of the books their student checks out to ensure that the subject matter is appropriate for their chronological age. Feel free to ask me or your child's teacher if you have any questions.
